The Education Committee of the Waterways Association of Pittsburgh has developed a program to inform high school seniors and those enrolled in local technical schools of job opportunities within our industry.

Boat Pilot Opening

Primary Responsibilities & Requirements:

Operating Technician I (River Pilot) is responsible for moving the barge fleet around the Mon River basin. This will include placing barges under and around the Coal Unloaders, which remove the coal from the barges and then place empty barges in a designated pick up area.

Work Environment

The job is within an industrial environment and you will be required to work within various areas. Dependent upon the area you will work, the environmental conditions can be hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy.

Preferred Skills: High School diploma/ GED required

Certifications Required:

CURRENT UNITED STATES COAST GUARD LICENSE TO OPERATE 1000HP/100 TON MOTOR VESSEL ON THE MONONGAHELA RIVER. MUST ALSO HAVE A CURRENT MERCHANT MARINER CREDENTIAL, MASTER OF A TOWING VESSEL UPON WESTERN RIVERS, CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION RADAR OBSERVER (RIVERS) AND TWIC.

Requires a minimum of 1 year of manufacturing, production, industrial, or related work or military experience.
